Biographical Text

Joseph Eldridge Robinson grew up in Washington County and was raised by his grandparents to whom he credited all his success in life. Robinson moved to Kanab and became involved with the sheep and mercantile industries during the earlier part of his adult life. At twenty-nine years old, he was the youngest legislator during the 1895 Constitutional Convention. As an "ardent supporter of that principle," Robinson served on the Elections and Rights of Suffrage Committee, which drafted the portion of the state constitution granting women the franchise (Drumm 1896, 79). Robinson spent the latter part of his life in politics. In 1908, while serving as a mission president in California for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was involved in the San Francisco earthquake's recovery efforts. Robinson died in 1941 from heart disease.
