Biographical Text

Thomas Sevy spent much of his life in the mountains tending cattle and sheep, a career for which he “gained quite a reputation for sound judgment and financial ability” (Drumm 1896, 83). Standing six feet, three inches tall, Sevy was proud of his height. In 1891, he was elected Sheriff of Garfield County. Although re-elected to the position in 1894, Sevy resigned to run for the legislature. As a representative, he focused on agriculture, mercantile, and stock interests. Sevy later served as mayor of Panguitch for four years and as a city councilman for twelve. Additionally, he helped organize the Panguitch State Bank and held leadership positions in other companies. Sevy died in 1953 following a period of ill health.
