Biographical Text

Joseph Monson began a carpentry apprenticeship with his father at the age of twelve. In a short time, Monson was recognized as an efficient mechanic and draughtsman. In 1880 he started working as a carpenter on the Logan Temple. Following this, Monson ran a lumber yard and planned and supervised the construction of buildings in Utah and Idaho, including many of the facilities for the Agricultural College of Utah (now Utah State University). For eight years, Monson served as the supervisory architect for Utah State Schools. In this position, he created safety standards and uniform designs for new schools. Monson was an active member of the Democratic Party “for which he has been an ardent worker” (Drumm 1896, 71). He served in the final Territorial legislative session in addition to the first, second, fourth, and eighth state legislatures. Monson died just ten days after his wife in 1932.
