Biographical Text

Matthew Winberg Mansfield began his public service as a young man, despite a limited education. He was a member of the unsuccessful 1887 Constitutional Convention and served in numerous public positions, including justice of the peace, assessor and collector, prosecuting attorney, and surveyor. Mansfield studied law alone and was admitted to the bar in 1899. He additionally worked in agriculture, lumber, and livestock.

Mansfield served in the first and third legislative sessions where he “distinguished himself in the house as a leader on the Democratic side, and made many brilliant oratorical efforts…He was an earnest, aggressive legislator, but never carried the latter characteristic beyond the point of being willing to a compromise” (Drumm 1896, 76). He died in 1916 from stomach cancer.
