Biographical Text

At the age of eighteen, John Lowry was among the pioneers of 1847. His family settled in Manti, where he farmed in between being a frontiersman. He served in the local militia during the Black Hawk War. Following his time in the military, Lowry pursued various business ventures, including wool growing and milling. Lowry served on the Manti City Council for four terms and was the county assessor and collector for four years before becoming the county clerk. He continued to be politically active following his time as a representative. Although Lowry “had meager chances of attending school, yet he has always been an ardent student and possesses a store of information and much common sense” (Drumm 1896, 73). At sixty-six years old, he was the oldest member of the legislative session. He died in 1915 from gastrointestinal disease.
