Biographical Text
Thomas David Lewis graduated from the University of Deseret in 1886 as one of the first to receive a bachelor's degree from the institution. Following graduation, Lewis taught school and worked as deputy county recorder of Salt Lake County. He then attended and graduated from the University of Michigan with a law degree in 1891. Lewis was politically active in the years prior to statehood. As a representative, "he was chairman of the committee on elections, in which capacity he rendered marked service in perfecting the election laws passed, and he was equally as valuable as a member of the judiciary committee and on the floor" (Drumm 1896, 69).
