Biographical Text
Following his education, James X. Ferguson focused on mercantile pursuits in mining camps. He built the first business house in Park City. Ferguson served as justice of the peace in Carbon County for several terms. As a senator, he "was always a champion of labor's interests" (Drumm 1896, 79). Ferguson authored several bills to improve conditions for workers, two of which were passed. The first was a bill to help cover the cost of attorney's fees when employers sued for rightful wages, and the second was a bill outlawing child labor in mines.
