Biographical Text
Richard Erastus Egan came to Utah with his family in 1848. As a young man, he carried mail by mule. Later he was a rider for the Pony Express. His route was seventy-five miles west of Salt Lake City. On one run, Egan’s horse fell and broke its neck, forcing him to carry the heavy load five miles to the next station. As an adult, Egan’s principal career was ranching and farming. He served as justice of the peace and assessor in Davis County, never seeking notoriety or public office.
