Biographical Text

David McKay and his family moved to the United States in 1856 and planned on traveling to Utah upon arrival. However, financial misfortune compelled McKay and his family to stay on the east coast, and later Iowa, working as farmhands and in a brickyard to earn money for travel. In 1859, McKay crossed the plains to Utah, where he settled in Ogden. Shortly thereafter, at sixteen years old, he enlisted as a volunteer in the territorial militia, eventually advancing to a major. McKay owned several successful farming properties, raised sheep, and directed a mercantile institution. He served in several public offices and on the 1893 territorial legislature. As a state senator, McKay was chairman of the Irrigation and Agriculture Committee.
