Biographical Text

Elmer Byron Jones graduated from Iowa State University in 1883. His family was active in politics. He moved to Nebraska where he held several public offices. In 1890, Jones moved to Utah, practicing law in Provo until 1892, until relocating to Salt Lake City to partner with A. T. Schroeder. Following the family tradition of political activity, Jones participated in the campaign of 1894 and attended all of the Republican conventions since. Jones later became President of the Utah Independent Telephone Company.

Jones was an early supporter of Heber M. Wells. Contentions during the gubernatorial nominations at the Republican state convention led Jones to declare “a bitter war has been raging in our party that it is unwise to concede to either faction. Therefore, it is my pleasant duty to nominate one under whose banner all factions can work together, namely Heber M. Wells” (Lyman 1995, 10). As a state senator, Jones served as chairman of the Private Corporations and Insurance Committee.
