Biographical Text

William Henry Gibbs emigrated to Utah in 1863. Following an adventurous trip across the plains, the family settled in Willard before moving to Portage in 1867. Here, Gibbs drove the team that plowed the first furrow for Samaria Lake Irrigating Company, of which he was director for four years. Gibbs was civically-minded from a young age. He held several public offices throughout his life, including constable, justice of the peace, and a school trustee. In 1894, Gibbs represented Box Elder County at the 1895 Constitutional Convention. Following his time as a representative, Gibbs continued his civic service in addition to farming and producing livestock. He died in 1936 from heart failure.
