Biographical Text

Harwood Murray Cushing was born in Ontario, Canada. His family moved to Kansas in 1868, where he grew up. In 1878, Cushing moved to Denver, Colorado; his overland trip there was full of hardship. He began working as a messenger, first for the Union Pacific Railroad and then the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. Following this position, Cushing became the general baggage office's chief clerk before being appointed general baggage agent, which eventually led him to Utah, where he continued his prominent railroad work. Cushing died of pneumonia in 1932, five months after retiring, having never missed a day of work.
