Biographical Text

Lee Ambrose Curtis was raised by his grandparents on a farm in Iowa. He attended Central University and taught school for several years in addition to serving in Iowa public offices. Wanting to pursue new career interests, Curtis moved to Colorado in 1888. He worked as a civil engineer and railroad surveyor for the Midland Railroad and then as the Arkansas Valley Smelting Company's head carpenter. Curtis moved to Ogden in 1890 and helped inspect the new sewers under construction in the city. Shortly after serving as a representative, Curtis returned to Iowa, dying there in 1909.

As a representative, Curtis served as chairman of the Labor Committee and focused on labor issues and conditions, which fact gave him large prestige in his efforts in behalf of the sons of toil" (Drumm 1896, 85).
