Biographical Text

Andrew Phillip Sorensen emigrated to Utah with his parents in 1863, where they settled in Cache Valley. Sorensen attended Brigham Young Academy Logan and the University of Deseret. Following his graduation in 1885, he taught school across Utah until 1893, when he moved to Monticello and entered the mercantile business. Sorenson held several public offices, including county recorder and superintendent of schools. As “a careful and able legislator,” Sorensen authored the bill to abolish capital punishment, which was hotly contended and ultimately defeated during the first session (Drumm 1896, 85). Sorenson also served in the second legislative session.
