Biographical Text
Abraham Owen Smoot attended Brigham Young University and was one of the first to graduate from the institution. At seventeen years old, he started the lumber and coal business, Smoot Lumber Company. Smoot held many public offices throughout his life, including county assessor and director, and secretary of the Territorial Insane Asylum. In 1881, Smoot was appointed United States commissioner but resigned on account of having to enforce the Edmunds-Tucker Act, which he opposed. Because “his ability as a legislator was recognized by his constituents,” Smoot was heavily involved in Utah legislation (“Former Senator Smoot Passes Away” ). He served as a representative during the first state session and as a senator in the second and fourth legislative sessions.
