Nathan John Harris grew up tending his family’s livestock in Harrisville, Utah. In 1884, he attended the University of Deseret. Following his graduation in 1886, Harris worked as a farmer and a teacher before moving to Ann Arbor to study law at the University of Michigan. Harris returned to Utah after graduating in 1894 and began a practice in Ogden. At differing times Harris held the offices of school trustee, justice of the peace, county and district attorney. He served in the first and second legislative sessions. In 1910, Governor William Spry appointed him as a district judge. He was re-elected two years later and served until January 1, 1917. Harris enjoyed gardening and was a great lover of books, and had a large library. He died in 1936 from complications of diabetes.
