Biographical Text
Born in England, George Beard had only three weeks of schooling as a child. After a harrowing journey from England, he arrived in Coalville, Utah, in 1868. In 1871 he began working for the Coalville Co-operative Mercantile, first as a chore boy then working his way up to manager. He married Sarah Lovenia Bullock (1859-1932) in 1877. Beard held several public offices throughout his life. In 1891, he was elected mayor of Coalville. Shortly thereafter, Coalville had an outbreak of diphtheria. Beard helped care for the sick, clean houses, and attend to the dead. Although he never referred to himself as an artist, Beard was a talented illustrator, painter, and photographer. A collection of his photographs are available through BYU Digital Collections. Despite multiple health issues, Beard led an active life until his death in 1944.
As a State Representative, Beard authored bills establishing the office of coal mine inspector, granting bounties on predatory animals, and preventing the adulteration of candy. Additionally, he served as chairman of the Special Committee, which adopted the Great Seal of the State of Utah.
