Biographical Text

Edward Hunter Snow graduated from Brigham Young Academy, 1884 and taught school for a year. He then worked as a telegraph operator and was the one who received the telegraphic bulletin to St. George in September 1890, announcing the Manifesto. Snow held multiple public offices in Washington County and was appointed to the 1895 Constitutional Convention.

In 1896, he served on the first state legislative assembly and was chairman of the Apportionment Committee. Snow returned to the senate for the second session in 1897. Throughout his political career, Snow urged leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to lessen the Church’s involvement in politics. Snow later chaired the Utah State Tax Commission and is credited with developing the state’s modern tax code.

A strong supporter of education, Snow did much to improve and develop the state’s educational system. He held various school-related positions throughout his life and helped develop legislation that established Southern Utah University. He also founded schools, including Dixie State College and one in Santa Clara, Utah. Snow additionally aided in the overall development of St. George, Utah. As an influential politician and community member, Snow was often called on to make public speeches. Perhaps most notable is that at a gathering on Armistice Day 1918. To help stop the spread of the Spanish Flu, Snow and all those present wore masks. Snow died in 1932 from a heart attack.
