Biographical Text
Edward Martin Allison grew up in Coalville, Utah. In 1880, he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, to attend the University of Deseret. After graduation, he returned to Coalville, teaching in the district schools while also studying law.
Allison was elected the county attorney of Summit County in 1884 and was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of Utah Territory in 1887. Allison then moved to Ogden, Utah, forming partnerships first with Judge P. H. Emerson and then James N. Kimball.
In spring 1891, Allison was elected a member of the City Council of Ogden. A few months later, President Benjamin Harrison appointed him as assistant United States attorney for Utah Territory under C. S. Varian. Allison served in this capacity until resigning in 1893 upon Grover Cleveland’s inauguration as president. During this time, Allison continued to serve on the City Council of Ogden, to which he was elected president in 1892. Additionally, that year he was a mayoral candidate for Ogden. Following his resignation as assistant United States attorney for Utah Territory, Allison set up his own law practice. He served as a senator during the first, fourth, and fifth sessions of the state legislature, acting as senate president during his last session. In 1901, Allison joined a firm and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, continuing to practice until being appointed to the general counsel for the United States Shipping Board in Washington, D.C. Allison died in Washington, D.C., following a case of double pneumonia.
As a senator during the first session, Allison chaired the Education and Federal Relations committees, and “distinguished himself as one of the ablest members of that body” (Drumm 1896, 90).
