Biographical Text

After graduating from the University of Utah, Alvin Verrinder Taylor worked for the Western Union Telegraph Company and the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railway company. He then went into the stock business for a time. Taylor was then able to attend Columbia Law College, graduating in 1891. Following this, he worked for the United States War Department before returning to Utah, where he started his practice. Taylor was “a consistent and able legislator” and focused on bills related to criminal reform, the state prison, and industrial schools (Drumm 1896, 80). He was most proud of “a brilliant oration in support of the bill to abolish capital punishment” (Drumm 1896, 80).
