Biographical Text

William David Candland was a jack of all trades, working in farming, school teaching, surveying, livestock raising, electricity, and flour milling. However, he was primarily known for wool and is credited with bringing the Rambouillet sheep to the area. He was extensively involved with both local and national livestock groups. The Candland farm and house, located in Mount Pleasant, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In addition to his various business ventures, Candland also held several public offices in Sanpete County and was later the mayor of Mount Pleasant. As a senator of the first state legislative assembly, Candland served as chairman of the Appropriations and Claims and Manufacturers and Commerce committees. He also produced legislation on diseases of and damage to livestock. In 1905, he testified at the United States Senate Committee on behalf of Reed Smoot. Candland was again elected a state senator in 1920, serving sixteen years in total. He died in 1940 from natural causes.
